A Candle in the Dark

'...my publishers challenged me: "Wess, they won't care what you know until they know why you care. Are you going to write a book, or are you willing to really fight a battle for children?" Wes Clifford CEO of Compassion International wrote this quote when he was writing the book 'Too Small to Ignore: Why the Least of These Matters Most'

I read a powerful article from a talk he did called 'A Candle in the Dark'. It is reminder of how the most vulnerable citizens of the world; those with the least rights, who are most ill-equipt to help themselves; are children. But he also has a powerful message aimed at awakening the church and its intrinsic silence and the collusion of entire communities to hide and therefore perpetuate child abuse. It is reassuring to hear such a fierce advocate from within the church itself.

Certificate in Bushcraft Leadership NCFE Level 3 - 1 year instructor course

Below is the brilliant course I undertook in 2006-2007. I also attended superb courses with the very wise and fabulous teacher Thomas Schorr-kon of Trackways

Certificate in Bushcraft Leadership NCFE Level 3 - 1 year instructor course with the Woodcraft School.

Woodcraft School offer the first and only accredited course designed specifically for bushcraft instruction in the UK. We have written the qualification together with the NCFE who are the regulating body.

Previously Woodcraft School wrote and delivered a similar course at Plumpton College. They used a large mix of existing outdoor awards at various levels because, until then, no qualification was available specifically for bushcraft instruction. Now this unique instructor program is being run solely by Woodcraft School and has been designed for budding bushcraft instructors or those already in the field wanting a formal qualification to their name. The course is divided into 4 mandatory categories and covers the following subjects in depth:

Outdoor Living Skills - bushcraft skills including fire, water, shelter, equipment and clothing, backcountry cooking techniques, food hygiene (cert), navigation and hygiene.

Natural History - plant identification and use, tracking skills, wild foods, habitat and woodland management, ecology and conservation.

Craft - tool use and selection, tree felling and timber conversion and craft items including barkcraft, cordage, carving and bow making.

Lead and Instruct groups in Nature based Outdoor Learning
- instructional & teaching techniques, legislation for outdoor practitioners, codes of practice and risk assessment.

Also included in the course teaching is a 5 day Remote Response First Aid training, Basic Expedition Leaders Award - BEL, and Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate.

Accreditation

This entire qualification has been accredited by the NCFE as a level three qualification. This means that the subjects mentioned above are studied at an advanced level. The process of accreditation is run by the NCFE who are responsible for the quality assurance and control it in exactly the same format as any other wards they run.
Certification
The qualification is endorsed throughout by the NCFE who are responsible for certification. Successful candidates will receive a Certificate in Bushcraft Leadership Level 3 with both Woodcraft School and the NCFE logo present
This program is designed to equip you with the skills needed to instruct Bushcraft / Woodcraft courses and to lead groups in lowland Britain. The program is working towards you achieving a certificate from a national awarding body in both expedition and leadership skills, as well as field study skills.

NCFE = National Council for Further Education

The Emergency Prevention Handbook - Coming Soon!

The Emergency Prevention Handbook by Louise Brookes

A handbook of working methods and examples for optimising our adaptive capacity to climate change and humanitarian crises for individuals and global communities.

As an Advanced Survival Instructor and Permaculture Designer I have fifteen years experience in ecological community-led restoration projects and expeditions.

I have been collecting these 'tools' and putting this book together for the last two years. I am approaching agents and publishers; but considering publishing it myself. I want it to reach the people who really need it; in the fragile communities around this earth and those heavily out of balance places we have come to accept as 'normal'.

Environmental degradation, the struggles of refugees, and escalating conflict and economic instability mean that we need to apply the solutions that we already have, urgently and comprehensively. Too often solutions are used in isolation, by one group that promotes their solution. Together these solutions have a powerful positive remedial impact.

I have put all these methods and the bare bones instructions that enable to you to make them happen wherever you are and whatever your situation.

It is a handbook in the truest sense and brings a multiplicity of approaches together. It is practical; you can apply every method wherever you are, read about how it has already proven itself, about what it solves and how.

I see it as an Earth Medic First Aid kit. It fuses the essence of survival knowledge with the holism that is permacuture design, deep ecology and ecological restoration techniques and then it sets out in a step-by-step style how to get from very messy room (see planet) too tidy room (see planet and us 'living in balance'). But then it is also like a cook book because it is simple, if you follow the recipe you will get the result.

It is not about energy efficient lightbulbs, solarpanels and recycling; it's about the fundamentals of what we will change to be sustainable, of what our future will look like. I call it an Emergency Prevention Handbook because it's tone is similar to preventative medicine. I think that to have our optimum level of adaptive capacity it is like having a strong immune system. For the planet's immune system to be bolstered we have to have ecological diversity, we need cycles to be closed as they are in nature, all of us need to consider the consequences of all of our actions.

The other marvellous thing I have noticed is that we can become wealthy and abundant when we nurture our adaptive capacity - all of us, everywhere can. The economies or free economies that spring from these systems are sound.

I have spent my life learning what it takes to live in balance with our environment, it is not around us, we are in it and most of us are terribly out of step with it.

But I am not dispirited. Grass bounces back when you tread on it, dandelions cover your lawn after you mow it and weeds (lovely often edible weeds) grow up through your tarmac. It's just a matter of rounding off a few sharp edges, adjusting a few medieval laws and learning to play second fiddle to the spirit that moves through all things.

The Honour List 2010

Its nearly time for the 2010 Positive Impact Living Honour List.
Post your nominations in the comments or send me a message at louisembrookes (at) hotmail.com below for anyone who you consider should be honoured for the positive impact they have made with their lives. This is a humble form of Honouring as I don't have a huge grant to give them - I wish I did. Anyone got any ideas? I just think that there should be more honouring and gratitude going around.
I also think respect should be given to those who risk their lives to help others as there's a lot of Aid Agencies and organisations who pull out when the going gets tough and I'm sure there are those who would stay if they could and make a difference.
You can see some photos of last years Honorees below in the 'Photos' section of the floating Wibiya bar and below in the slideshow is The Honours List 2009:-

Check out 'The Honour List'
The Honour List is 'to honour people who help humanity and may put themselves in great danger to do whatever it is they do.'
